Director for FES, boasts a remarkable career dedicated to the advancement of lithium-ion battery technology. His journey began in 1985 when he joined NEC, where he initially focused on printed circuit boards before transitioning to the development of materials for ceramic capacitors (1987 1994). This early experience laid the groundwork for his groundbreaking contributions in the field of Li-ion batteries. Dr. Shirakata's pivotal achievement came in 1994, when he led the team that achieved the world's first mass production of manganese spinel (LiMn2O4), a key cathode material for Li-ion batteries. This innovation paved the way for mass production of manganese-based Li-ion batteries for mobile phones at Japan Moli Energy's Toyama factory.

In 2000, he transferred to NEC Central Research Laboratories, where he continued his dedication to battery technology by developing large laminated batteries. This innovative design had significant implications for future applications. His commitment to commercialization led him to NEC Tokin in 2002, where he assumed the role of Director of the Research and Development Center. There, his focus shifted towards large laminated batteries for automotive use. This vision culminated in the establishment of Lamillion Energy in 2006, a joint venture with Subaru that aimed to develop automotive batteries.

Shirakata's relentless pursuit of innovation continued in 2007 with the establishment and launch of Automotive Energy Supply Company (AESC) in a joint venture with Nissan Motor Co. This collaboration proved instrumental in the development and launch of large laminated batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), specifically the Nissan Leaf in 2010.His expertise extended beyond automotive applications. In the same year, he established NEC Energy Devices, a company focused on the manufacturing of electrodes for EVs. Shirakata's career at NEC culminated in his retirement at the end of 2012. However, his passion for battery technology remained undimmed. In 2013, he joined Yamagata University's Organic Innovation Center, continuing his research endeavours. His dedication to academic pursuits continued in 2014 with his appointment as a Specially Appointed Professor at Tohoku University's New Industry Creation Hatchery Center. Notably, his research focus has remained on manganese-based Li-ion batteries (Mn-LiB) throughout his career, spanning from 1994 to the present day. Shirakata's most recent venture is his role as Director of Fine Eco Solution Co., Ltd., which he assumed in 2023. This move signifies his continued commitment to developing sustainable solutions for renewable energy applications, utilizing his vast experience with Mn LiB technology.
